1: How does the story of Borneo exemplify the idea of ecosystems and the interaction of organisms (specifically the importance of all organisms in that ecosystem)?
It explains the importance of one species in an ecosystem and how they help each other out by transferring energy.
2: How does the story exemplify how humans (in our attempt to fix one thing), cause unforeseeable problems in ecosystems?
Well looking at this I know we as humans act as animals so in an attempt to get rid of something and fast, in this case DDT, we completely don’t think to much about the other animals.
3: Explain how a toxin in a food web will harm some while killing others- why did the mosquitos and cats die while other things lived? (hint: research bioaccumulation & biomagnification)
Basically one harmful thing to an animal doesn’t mean all of them are affected. Because of this the other animals not affected get to multiply.
4: Explain why you think DDT has been banned in the U.S. but is still in production and used in countries all over the world.
It’s banned in the US because they only care about themselves. They’re selfish. Or maybe the US just doesn’t want to harm to many citizens because of how large their population is.
5: If DDT is still being used around the world, but not in the U.S.- are we still exposed to it? (Discuss).
I hope not. We do get multiple products even animals from different countries. As I stated before something like DDT can maybe affect different animals. But just because certain animals aren’t affected it doesn’t mean they don’t have it in their body.
6: Do you think scientists should have sprayed the island with DDT? If not, what should they have done about the Malaria issue?
There really is no true answer for this. If I was a scientist I would have a hard time deciding what to do. On one hand if you don’t spray this pesticide people are going to die. On the other hand if you spray the pesticide you kill and ecosystem.
